Program Description (Background) / Description du programme (contexte)
The proposed project seeks to address the pressing health needs of populations impacted by the ongoing humanitarian crises in the Northwest, Southwest and Far North regions of Cameroon, which has also been affected by floods. Targeting 200,000 individuals—including 20% from host communities, 46% internally displaced persons (IDPs), and 34% returnees—this initiative aims to reduce morbidity and mortality rates among these vulnerable groups. Funding for this project will facilitate timely access to high-quality essential healthcare services, including trauma care, mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS), reproductive health services, and effective surveillance and response systems for outbreaks and disasters. Emergency health kits will be distributed to WHO-supported operational health facilities to enhance essential healthcare delivery. At the same time, mobile medical clinic (MMC) will be established in areas with non-functional or partially functional facilities to provide basic health services for adults and children and referrals for advanced care. Trauma surgeons will be deployed to three facilities to ensure the availability of trauma specialists, while trauma kits will be provided to selected referral hospitals. Additionally, clinical psychologists will be made available to offer necessary MHPSS services.
To enhance public health readiness, event-based epidemiological surveillance will be strengthened across all health districts in the six targeted divisions, improving early detection and timely responses to public health events and epidemic-prone diseases like cholera.
A key feature of this initiative is incorporating a cash approach mechanism using health vouchers, which will support the targeted population in areas with accessible healthcare facilities to cover the cost of care. The implementing partners will manage the distribution and regulation of these vouchers, which will be issued for the free treatment of various health conditions. During awareness sessions, the partners will identify individuals seeking healthcare and distribute vouchers following established protocols. Throughout the project’s implementation, we will prioritize disability inclusion, accountability to affected individuals, and measures to prevent and respond to sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment (PRSEAH), all while adhering to fundamental humanitarian principles.
